Some Chamber History . . .

It all began in 1897 with the Coatesville Board of Trade. In 1916 we became the Coatesville Chamber of Commerce, then in 1960 the Coatesville Area Chamber. Since 1976 we have been the Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce. Always changing with the times but never straying from our goal of a better life for all.

In July 1917 the Coatesville Chamber of Commerce rounded out its first year with President A.F. Huston:

In June of 1916 we started with 488 individual members carrying 574 memberships and during the last twelve months there has been created a new community spirit for progress, which is more valuable than any other asset. First important matters; parks and playgrounds developed; Coatesville Housing Company formed to address rapidly growing population; Associated Charities formed; train ticket prices cut in half from Coatesville to Philadelphia and two trains added to the schedule; one banquet and seven smokers were held without any expense to our members.

The Coatesville Airport was procured after two years of effort by a committee of the Chamber of Commerce, and dedicated on August 2, 1930.

During 1937 the Coatesville Chamber handled 7,451 pieces of mail and answered 351 inquires covering all phases of community activity. During the same period we conducted 67 Board and Committee meetings.
